Recommended Books on Spirituality and Dreams An excellent work, emphasizing the evolution of fundamental Western attitudes toward dreams over the centuries to the present day is Kelly Bulkeley’s fine book The Wilderness of Dreams: Exploring the Religious Meanings of Dreams in Modern Western Culture (State Univ of NY Press, 1994). His systematic comparative survey of eight major schools of thought about dreams is particularly clear and informative. See also Kelly’s Spiritual Dreaming (Paulist Press 1995) described under “Cross Cultural Dreaming.” The best book on working with dreams in a consciously (liberal Christian) spiritual context is Dream Symbol Work: Unlocking the Energy of Dreams and Spiritual Experiences by Patricia Berne and Louis Savory (Paulist Press, 1991). |
