Why Professional Training to become a Dream Worker?
This is a reasonable question. ANYONE who has a basic grasp of the projective process of dream exploration, (see "Basic Dream Work Tool Kit"), can start doing responsible, productive dream work with any one, any time. So why seek further training? Many people have come to me, particularly over the past few years, with a deep desire to do this work professionally, in schools, churches, prisons, hospices, and other organizations and professional settings. They all say, and I can only agree, that in order to persuade others to let them do the work, let alone hire them to do it, they require some sort of "credential" - at very least a certificate saying that they have successfully completed and a course of study involving the basic skills and information necessary to do the work.
It is to meet the needs of this growing number of people that the "Marin Institute for Projective Dream Work" was initially formed. Many other professional educational and training programs are springing up all over North America, and there appears to be every indication that professional dream work education and training is an idea whose time has come.
"Projective dream work" is not the only technique for exploring the multiple levels and depths of meaning that inhere in every dream, but I am firmly convinced it is the best way to begin. That said, I also believe that dreamers and dream workers should have as full a range of tools & techniques at their disposal as possible.
So, if you want to form dream groups with your friends and do dream one-to-one work with them from time to time, there is no need to get a lot of further training beyond the basics of projective dream work, but if you want to add this to your professional bag-of-tricks as a minister, teacher, therapist, social worker, counselor, etc., or if you want to start doing dream work with institutions like schools, churches, and hospices, and maybe even get paid for it - then you should probably give serious consideration to getting some further training at one of the many new dream work education programs that are springing up around North America. Contact us for more information about them.
Marin Institute for Projective Dream Work
What kind of program is this....
The "Marin Institute for Projective Dream Work", (MIPD) is an individualized, "apprenticeship" style program and is meant for mature learners able to think creatively about what they want to do with a dream work credential, and what their dream work focus might be. We ask students to be self-directed and self-motivated; the benefit of this is you are (within our parameters) designing your own program.
Satisfying requirements...
I offer a variety of workshops all over the US, some in Mexico and Canada, and in South Korea and Australia. All of my workshops and classes will qualify for some of the MIPD requirements. My workshops will be listed on my Schedules page of this site
You will need to find other workshops to fulfil your requirements, in addition to the ones I offer. We'll assume you will research other dream related workshops and together we'll make an assessment about which will qualify and what requirements will be met. You may get credit for classes already taken, also..
To get final credit for a Seminar or for the Practicum, there are certain other requirements detailed below.
Requirements and Costs
Application Fee: $50.00, payable to Jeremy Taylor
The Seminar titles are descriptive of the content we would like you to explore. You do not need to take a seminar with this specific title. So look for seminars that offer content that is similar. You may find that Independent Study is a way to satify the requirements.
Seminar #1: "Introducing Group Projective Dream Work" (10hrs) Learning goal: a basic grounding in projective dream work. Any one of my "Introductory Dream Work" workshops will satisfy this requirement, but you do not need to take it from me. There may be others (perhaps MIPD graduates) offering workshops in projective dream work. A seminar which is a survey of dream working techniques (although useful) will not satisfy this requirement.
To receive credit for the workshop you will need either to write a paper or have a 1 hr phone conversation with me which will address what you've learned and answer how you would do an"introduction" of the work to a previously uninformed audience; what target audiences are most appealing to you; what written materials will be used; what should go into the publicity and promotion; what philosophy and experience underpins this introduction; ethical issues in doing dream work and more.
Seminar #2: "Global Perspectives on Dreams & Dreaming"
(10 hrs)
Learning goal:to gain a perspective on Western and non-Western forms of dream work; to gain a broader and deeper appreciation of the spiritually important and creatively dynamic place dreams and dreaming have always held in cultures and societies around the world, in all periods of history and pre-history; to gain a basic knowledge of the most common psychological/biological theories about dreams and dreaming.
To receive credit for the workshop you will need to either write a paper or have a 1 hr phone conversation with me which will address what you've learned.
Elective seminars (2 are required, 10 hrs each).
Learning goal: this is a chance for you to explore specific areas of particular interest. For example, you might want to explore other ways of doing dream work, or focus on dreams and the body, or dreams and creativity/art; working with the dreams of the dying, exploring shamanic dream work or lucid dreaming, children's dreams or....
To receive credit for each workshop you will need either to write a paper or have a 1 hr phone conversation with me which will address what you've learned. Note: one hour conversation or paper for EACH Elective Seminar.
Seminar Costs...The costs of individual seminars will be determined by whoever offers the seminar; you pay them directly. To receive credit for the seminar you need to have phone conversations or write papers (as described above). Cost of each phone conversation with Jeremy is $65/hr. If you choose to write a paper the reading fee is $50. Note: All papers and project materials must be accompanied by stamped, self-addressed return envelopes and packing materials.
Budget note: there are a total of 4 seminars required, and 4 phone conversations = $260. If you choose to do papers instead, the cost would be $200. All checks should be made out to Jeremy Taylor
Practicum #1: Facilitation of Small Groups (5 meetings)
Learning goal: to experience facilitating your own small group doing projective dream work. You'll need to lead at least 1 small group, of at least 5 people, for at least 5 meetings. You will be responsible for setting up the group.
To receive credit you'll have two, 1 hour phone conversations with a mentor (me, or someone we have approved) while doing the groups. During those conversations you and the mentor will discuss your approach, ethical concerns, and any other issues of importance to you.
Cost....As described above you'll have total of two 1 hour conversations with me or with approved mentors. If you do these appts with me the fee is $65/hr If you do these appointments with someone else you need to pay them whatever fee they have set.
Budget note: two 1 hour conversations with me would be $130.
Practicum #2: Working With Your Own Clients (10 hrs)
Learning goal: this is a chance to work one-on-one with clients. You'll find your own clients and you'll need to work 10 hours total with at least 2 clients (it can be 2 hours with one and 8 hours with the other).
To receive credit you'll work with a mentor (me or someone we approve); you'll have two, 1 hour phone conversations while doing the work. These conversations are a chance for you to explore issues that come up, get help with clients' dreams, and your response to them.
Cost...As described above you'll have total of two 1 hour conversations with me or with approved mentors. If you do these appts with me the fee is $65/hr If you do these appointments with someone else you need to pay them whatever fee they have set.
Budget note: two 1 hour conversations with me would be $130.
Practicum#3: Working Your Own Dreams With a Mentor (5 hrs)
Learning goal: we all need to keep in touch with our unconscious. Working with our own dreams "keeps us honest" as dream workers.
To receive credit you'll do five 1 hr meetings or phone conversations with me or an approved mentor.
Cost...involves 5 hours of work with me or an approved mentor. If you do this work with me the rate is $65/hr. If with someone else you need to pay the fee they set.
Budget note: Five 1 hr phone conversations with me would be $325.
Certification Fee: $50.00, payable to Jeremy Taylor
